Electric vehicle drivers can now find more than a dozen places to get a fast charge along Washington’s major roadways. The Washington State Department of Transportation and partner AeroVironment successfully completed the installation and commissioning of all 14 electric vehicle-charging locations that were planned and funded through the project. Public Roads magazine highlights the West Coast Electric Highway in its November/December 2012 issue. EV drivers now have the freedom to travel through Oregon’s wine country, along the Gorge to the Hood River, and to the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Department of Transportation, AeroVironment and partners celebrated the opening of a charging station between Interstate 5 and U.S. 101 opening new territory to EV drivers. On June 16, a dozen electric vehicle drivers traveled over the Cascade Mountains to inaugurate the US Hwy 2 Stevens Pass Scenic Byway as the nation’s first EV-Friendly Tourism Corridor. Drivers of ten Nissan Leafs, one Tesla, and one Mitsubishi i-MiEV made the 100+ mile historic drive. They demonstrated that people driving electric vehicles can enjoy the scenic trip without range anxiety and without using a drop of gas. The West Coast Electric Highway provides electric vehicle drivers with a basic network of fast charging stations. As new charging stations open for the public, the network becomes more robust and EV drivers gain connections to more places. This sign on the highway means that an electric vehicle fast charging station is nearby. The federal highway administration granted permission to use this alternate symbol on highways and local roads in Washington and Oregon. The blue and white sign is similar to other fueling signs except the graphic image contains the letters E.V. and the fuel pump is replaced with an electrical cord.
